What Is Shoulder Impingement?

Your shoulder is composed of four muscles that keep your arm (humerus) in the shoulder socket (glenoid), these muscles are referred to as your rotator cuff.  The rotator cuff is also in charge of moving your shoulder and arm when reaching overhead, pulling, pushing, swimming, lifting, and throwing. When performing these movements, the rotator cuff can get pinched or “impinged” against the bones around your shoulder - this is shoulder impingement.

Signs & Symptoms of Shoulder Impingement

Shoulder Impingement pain is a common issues in the shoulder. Usually shoulder impingement is movement related, specifically with overhead activities. When aggravated, simple tasks like driving, getting dressed, washing hair, or even computer work can also cause pain. Though not as common, an individual can have structural anatomy that can impinge the shoulder.

Shoulder Impingement Treatment at Kinetic

We see people with shoulder impingement all the time at Kinetic, and we get excellent results through our unique approach - combining both active rehab and soft tissue treatment to get you out of pain fast!

Working on the tissue around the shoulder using Active Release Techniques and Graston Therapy we make sure the shoulder is healing properly and you are getting out of pain as quick as possible. But, that's only half of the equation. After treatment, we have you learn corrective functional exercises as part of your personalized rehab program. It's these exercises that correct movement dysfunction and re-train your body (and brain) how to move properly to prevent further or future injury.

How Can Kinetic Help Treat My Shoulder Impingement?

At Kinetic we work hard to figure out what caused the problem in the first place. We’ll take you through an extensive movement assessment to take a look at your shoulder, neck, and back as well as your lifting, reaching, and overhead mechanics. We want to make sure that once you get out of pain, you can get back to the sport or activity that you love! If you want to return to lifting and climbing, or just be pain free when holding your child, we want to get you comfortable doing that.

If you think you have shoulder impingement or any type of shoulder pain, we'd be happy to see you at any of our clinics. You can schedule an appointment online or call the location most convenient for you!
